Information about these nutrients that help support immune function…

Vitamin C.png

Vitamin C

Most have heard of Vit. C and its antioxidant properties. Its one of the best nutrients in our citrus fruits (think oranges and lemons/limes). This powerhouse nutrient is involved in many of our essential body processes, one of which involves our complex immune system. Vitamin C is essential in the production of our white blood cells, our first line defenders against infection. It also plays a role in our skin barrier and has been shown to reduce the recovery time of those with pneumonia(the very type of condition taking the lives of those with COVID-19). It's no wonder this nutrient has flown off the shelves.

Vitamin D.png

Vitamin D3

Sunshine is the best way to help your body produce this essential nutrient, and we should all be getting more with our #saferathome lifestyles. But almost every client I've run labs on has been deficient in this nutrient. We usually dig deeper into why and labs can help determine specific dosing, but most of us could use a boost. I love using Vitamin D3 in liquid form because of its absorption and convenience. Our whole family will dose from the same bottle.

How does Vitamin D support your immune function? This "sunshine vitamin" is associated with autoimmunity by helping your body to better recognize the problem instead of attacking your own tissues. Also, Vit. D helps strengthen the part of our immune system that fights disease and infection.

Zinc.png

Zinc

This nutrient is involved in the development of our immune system cells that protect us from invaders like bacteria, yeast, and viruses. Also, it can act like an antioxidant and help prevent injury to our cells when there is inflammation. When we're deficient in this nutrient, our immune system is certainly weaker!

Probiotics.png

Probiotics

Our gut lining is one of our first lines of defense from invaders and our immune system response. Good gut bacteria have been shown to improve the function of our gut lining. Many of us, including our kids, have been on doses of antibiotics at some point or eat a poor diet, which alters the amounts of good gut bacteria that support our immune system. Restoring these bacteria and promoting the growth of many other strains, starts with our diet, but can be helped with probiotic supplementation. We're learning so much in this field of the "microbiome" but generally speaking a high-quality probiotic with diverse strains is part of a good daily routine to support immune health.

Medicinal Mushrooms

When most of us think of mushrooms we think of a pizza topping, fungus, or getting high. But MEDICINAL mushrooms have been used for centuries to support many areas of health, particularly immune function. Reishi is one mushroom in particular with immune boosting properties, involving the stimulation of the type of cytokines that lower inflammation. The product I use personally and recommend often uses multiple parts of the Reishi mushroom in addition to the herb astragalus, a Chinese medicine herb that has been shown to benefit the respiratory tract.

NAC

This nutrient (also known as N-aceytl-cysteine) has many wonderful uses and properties, including being a precursor to our most powerful antioxidant, glutathione. It has also been associated with loosening of mucus and decreasing inflammation in the lungs. Those with chronic bronchitis, COPD, coughing, wheezing, or respiratory attacks may definitely benefit by having this nutrient on board.

These are some pretty basic recommendations for immune system support that would be helpful for most people. Feel free to reach out if you have any more specific questions. You can contact us HERE.
